In most sentences, English marks grammatical relations only through word order. The subject constituent precedes the verb and the object constituent follows it.
BES (Basic English Sentence) Search is a non-commercial tool for finding beginner-level English sentences for use in teaching materials. It uses a mix of short and long sentences. The short sentences serve as "breathing grounds" for readers to digest information and the long sentences serve as an elaboration of two concepts: informal and formal logic. It uses simple words whenever possible. It focuses on describing the two concepts of logic and really digs down on it.

Personal names and surnames may be pronounced like a standard English word, but with different spelling: "balance" and "John Ballance"; "war" and "Evelyn Waugh" (if spoken with a non-rhotic accent); "marshal" and "George Marshall"; "chaplain" and "Charlie Chaplin".
