The town of Madisonville is located on the banks of the Tchefuncte River, near where the river enters Lake Pontchartrain. According to the United States Census Bureau , the town has a total area of 2.51 square miles (6.51 km 2 ), of which 2.49 square miles (6.46 km 2 ) is land and 0.02 square miles (0.06 km 2 ), or 0.86%, is water. From the south, LA 1077 begins at the southern tip of Madisonville where the Tchefuncte River flows into Lake Pontchartrain. The route heads north on Main Street, closely following the west bank of the river. Within its first mile, LA 1077 crosses a one-lane bridge spanning a small canal, followed by a narrow two-lane bridge over a bayou.
