Hanna Holborn Gray (born October 25, 1930) is an American historian of Renaissance and Reformation political thought and Professor of History Emerita at the University of Chicago. She served as president of the University of Chicago , from 1978 to 1993, having earlier served as president pro tempore of Yale University in 1977–1978.
She is also Professor, by courtesy, of Classics. From 2013 to 2019, she was Director of the Stanford Humanities Center. She received her B.A. from Pomona College and her Ph.D. from the University of Michigan. Her expertise is American history before 1900, especially the history of ideas, political theory, and the history of science. [1]
