William Henry Gerdts Jr. (January 18, 1929 – April 14, 2020) was an American art historian and professor of Art History at the CUNY Graduate Center. Gerdts was the author of over twenty-five books on American art. An expert in American Impressionism, he was also well known for his work on nineteenth-century American still life painting.
The American Academy of the Fine Arts was an art institution founded in 1802 in New York City, to encourage appreciation and teaching of the classical style. [1] It exhibited copies of classical works and encouraged artists to emulate the classical in their work. [ 2 ]
In addition to several books on drawing, Hale authored numerous articles, including one on drawing in the Encyclopædia Britannica, and an entry on "The History of American Painting" for the Grolier Encyclopaedia. [3] He also had verse and fiction published in The New Yorker and Mademoiselle magazines.
