The Groton Bank Historic District, commonly known as Groton Heights, is a primarily residential 50-acre (20 ha) historic district in the City of Groton (within the Town of Groton) in Connecticut. The district was added to the National Register of Historic Places on March 24, 1983.
Groton used to include what is now the town of Ledyard, which separated from Groton in 1836. The original center of Groton is still known as Center Groton at the present-day intersection of Route 184 and Route 117, now in the north-central part of town, due to the departure of Ledyard to the north. About a mile north of US 1, Route 117 has an interchange with I-95 (Exit 88), then continues northward towards the village of Center Groton, where it meets Route 184. There is also access to the Star Plaza shopping area near this junction. Route 117 then enters the town of Ledyard as Center Groton Road.
In 1958, Route 84 was renumbered to Route 95 to serve as a temporary link for motorists following I-95, which had not yet been completed in Southeastern Connecticut. In December 1964, Route 95 was renumbered as I-95 opened in the Groton area. [3] The eastern terminus was also truncated from the state line to its current location.
