The Army selected the Neosho site for the post due to its proximity to water, a cross roads to two major railroads (Kansas City Southern and the Frisco railroads), and two major U.S. highways (US 71 running north–south and US 60 and US 66, running east–west). The Jefferson Barracks Military Post is located on the Mississippi River at Lemay, Missouri, south of St. Louis. It was an important and active U.S. Army installation from 1826 through 1946. In 1948, the base was conveyed by the Air Force back to the City of Saint Joseph, Missouri with the exception of 142 acres (0.57 km 2) set aside for use by the Air National Guard organized in 1947. Some of the old temporary World War II era barracks were still present on the base until the Great Flood of 1993 when they were destroyed.
