Gamleys was a chain of toy shops mainly located in the south of the United Kingdom with a head office in Hove, near Brighton.The company was founded in 1919. [1] Unlike many of its rivals such as Toys "R" Us, Gamleys operated smaller shops in high streets and shopping centres rather than larger super stores.
The original shop opened in 1974 on London Street, Reading, Berkshire. [2] The business was started by John Richard Beale. [3] The mail order department was in the basement. Beale employed the services of a child psychologist to ensure that the toys and books were of a positive and educational value to children.
