Most healthcare providers define a fever as a temperature of 100.4°F (38°C) or higher when taken rectally or 100°F (37.8°C) or higher when taken by mouth. A newborn (birth to three months) that has a fever of 100.4°F or higher needs to be seen by a healthcare provider as soon as possible. For young children (three to 12 months), call a provider if the fever is higher than 102°F or lasts longer than 24 hours.
