During the time the series was in production, CBS aired the half-hour special The Popeye Valentine Special: Sweethearts at Sea on February 14, 1979. [5] The All New Popeye Hour ran on CBS until September 1981, when it was shortened to a half-hour show and retitled The Popeye and Olive Comedy Show. The show added two new segments.
Accompanied by the admiring Olive Oyl, the brawny Bluto, the hungry Wimpy, and little Swee'Pea, he heads for the Sea of Mystery, which happens to be in the evil Sea Hag's domain. Strange things begin to happen along the way, as the group encounters sirens, serpents, and menacing mists.
Bluto, like Popeye, is enamored of Olive Oyl, and he often attempts to kidnap her. However, with the help of some spinach, Popeye usually ends up defeating him. Some cartoons portray Popeye and Bluto as Navy buddies, although in these episodes Bluto usually turns on Popeye when an object of interest (usually Olive) is put between them.
The Sea Hag tries to sink the boat with numerous guests on board to reclaim it. Popeye's son Junior, after eating spinach, boards the ship and throws the hag her mermaid back. Then Bluto sees Popeye and, out of anger, socks Popeye away, afterwards Olive hitting Bluto with the club. The process repeats until Bluto gets tired. Popeye, finding his chance, socks Bluto, thus sending him out of the window. Popeye finds Bluto lying on Olive's balcony. When Popeye goes to sock him, Bluto knocks Popeye to a different balcony.
