That wasn’t even the problem either. There’s plenty of great game of thrones episodes that came after they passed the books. They just tried shoving an ending they should’ve been two full seasons minimum into 6 episodes.

Exactly they wanted to end the show, not that the ending was there. As stated in other comments they dropped or rushed plot lines. I will also add in they also went with a "Happy Ending" of sorts, when the selling point of Game of thrones was that main characters do die and it was more realistic in its story telling.

I think the major issue game of thrones had is that the best parts of it where when the people we wanted to win were loosing and the web of stories was thick. Once it got to the end it was just a straight shot to the end. If you enjoyed got you should watch Rome on HBO as it very likely influenced a lot how GOT was made
