Vernon County is a county located in the western region of the U.S. state of Missouri, on the border with Kansas. As of the 2020 census, the population was 19,707. [1] Its county seat is Nevada. [2] The county was organized on February 27, 1855, considerably later than counties in the eastern part of the state. [3]

The current Vernon County Courthouse was the third one to be built in Nevada; the first was a two-story building one block west of the present day courthouse. In addition to the court, it was also used for church services. At the outbreak of the Civil War, the population of Nevada was 425. [3] The first courthouse was burned during the Civil War.
