Shazam first became available as an app in 2006 exclusively on the Amp'd Mobile cellular service. Shazam for iPhone debuted on 10 July 2008, with the launch of Apple's App Store. Voice Memos is a voice recording app introduced on iPhones with the release of iPhone OS 3, designed for saving short snippets of audio for later playback. Saved voice memos can be shared as a .m4a file or can be edited, which allows parts of a recording to be replaced, background noise to be removed, or the length of a recording to be trimmed.
The latter can identify short snippets of audio (a few seconds taken from a recording), even if it is transmitted over a phone connection. Shazam uses Audio Fingerprinting for that, a technique that makes it possible to identify recordings. Musipedia, on the other hand, can identify pieces of music that contain a given melody.

Smule expanded its music experience to include the web in 2016, albeit in a consultative format for now. In October 2017, Smule started offering official Disney duets starting with the song 'You're Welcome' with Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson's Moana character, Maui.
