The first Catholic mass in Salina was celebrated in 1861 in a private home. Sacred Heart Church, the first Catholic church in the city, was dedicated in 1876. [13] In Beloit, the first mass was offered in 1871, with the first church, St. John the Baptist, dedicated in 1878. [14]
Pioneer Catholic settlers in the Beloit area had a deep concern for the education of their children. In the fall of 1879 with 15 students, St. John's Catholic School was founded in a small one room building. By 1900, enrollment reached 140 students thus creating a need for a larger more structured school building.
