Black Hawk, also spelled Blackhawk, is an unincorporated community located in Carroll County, Mississippi, United States, approximately 20 miles (32 km) southeast of Greenwood on Mississippi Highway 430 and approximately 4 miles (6.4 km) north of Acona. Black Hawk is part of the Greenwood, Mississippi micropolitan area.
The Black Hawk War was a conflict between the United States and Native Americans led by Black Hawk, a Sauk leader. The war erupted after Black Hawk and a group of Sauks, Meskwakis (Fox), and Kickapoos, known as the "British Band", crossed the Mississippi River, to the U.S. state of Illinois, from Iowa Indian Territory in April 1832.

Black Hawk's reasons for crossing into Illinois were to reclaim lost lands, and perhaps create a confederacy of Native Americans to stand against white settlement. [5] [6] Promises of aid from other Illinois tribes were made to the British Band, and Black Hawk believed that promises of assistance were made by the British in Canada. [5]
Black Hawk's forces were able to elude detection until the time they opened fire. [14] At around 4 p.m. four couriers from Galena bound for the army camp at Dixon's Ferry arrived at the fort. The fort's occupants were eager to hear their news from Galena and of the conflict with Black Hawk. [9] [13]
The conflict became known as the Black Hawk War. The Warrior was one of several steamboats pressed into service by the U.S. government for use by military forces after the outbreak of the 1832 Black Hawk War. [3] Warrior was used mostly as a troop transport during the war but it played a key role in the war's final battle. [4]
