Phi Beta Pi is an American professional fraternity for medical students. It was established at the West Pennsylvania Medical College. in 1891. Currently, the fraternity operates as a local orgaization with one active chapter at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston.
The first is for medical school chapters and the second is for pre-medical chapters. Pre-medical chapters use a two- or three-letter state/province abbreviation in their names. Chapters established before 1962 are noted in Baird's Manual (20th ed), while newer chapters are from the fraternity's website.
In 2003, the Winthrop South Nassau System became part of New York Presbyterian. [5] In 2017, Winthrop became affiliated with NYU Langone, becoming NYU Winthrop. [6] By 2019, a full asset merger between NYU and Winthrop had been complete. In November 2020, it was announced that the hospital changed its name to NYU Langone Hospital - Long Island. [7]
At formation it was known briefly as Pi Beta Phi professional fraternity, but changed its name because a woman's fraternity also known as Pi Beta Phi had prior claim to that name.
