George D. Roper became the sole owner of the Van Wie Gas Stove company after the company's debts were paid off on September 1, 1894.10 days later, a fire destroyed the facility. The factory was rebuilt and renamed as the Eclipse Gas Stove Company, and later expanded to include the Trahern Pump Company, found in 1857 and acquired in 1906.
Roper, previously named the Florence-Wehrle Company among other names, was founded in 1883, with it location in Newark, Ohio.The company, once the largest stove producer in the world was purchased by Sears and was later known for its lawn mowers sold by Sears for many years.
In 2002 Roper was selected as a Rhodes Scholar, and began study at University College, Oxford for a Doctoral program in mathematics with a focus on String Theory and quantum mechanics. In 1885, Robert Tulloch founded Phoenix Iron Works in Pyrmont.In 1913 the business was incorporated as Tulloch's Phoenix Iron Works and relocated to Rhodes.
