The article on clock cleaning solution says that using Murphy's Oil Soap is actually a very satisfactory (according to J. Losch) substitute for oleic acid. As far as ammonia, J. Losch mentions that 26% ammonia is preferable to the household kind which is 13%. My local Ace Hardware sells both concentrations.
For my ultrasonic I use Deox-007 clock cleaning solution. Pretty expensive for a gallon, but you dilute it about 5:1 up to 7:1 and you can clean a lot of parts before having to replace it. It is a water-based cleaner, biodegradable, and rinses with water which is free or almost.
Makeshift let-down tool, using the winding key and a 6-inch piece of broomstick. Saw a slot across the cut end of the stick, to hold the blade of the key. Put the key on the winding arbor and the stick on the key. Hold the stick firmly in one hand, twist it slightly to disengage the click pawl.
NAWCC Member. there is no magic bullet... just ones you prefer. i read yesterday (from a serious clock restorer) that one could us 'glass brushes' to clean up the plates. ammonia-based solutions can be harsh on plates... but i've used (gasp!) sos pads to get off legacy black marks... quickly rinsing after and only then putting in my ultrasonic ...
A tooth brush and some tooth picks are the cleaning tools to use. Use the tooth picks to clean the pivot holes (after the movement is disassembled). You can use that expensive clock cleaning solution if you like, or Dawn dish detergent or a number of other things. La's Totally Awesome Cleaner is really cheap and works well for hand cleaning.
Jul 29, 2019. #1. I use Priory Polishes ammoniated clock cleaning fluid, diluted 1:7, and find this very effective (other brands are available) but I find that, occasionally, some brass parts turn pink in the solution whilst most others come up really shiny brass. The photo shows the most striking example I’ve seen so far.
3) Completely disassemble the movement. 4) Clean the individual parts - preferably using an ultrasonic cleaner and a good clock cleaning fluid. A few parts should not be cleaned this way - notably balance wheels/springs. 5) Repair anything that needs it - install bushings, check/straighten wheels/arbors/pivots, etc.
NAWCC Member. Dec 11, 2010. #3. Hello Les, That cleaning solution is one of the milder movement cleaning solution. These cleaners are all basic solutions containing ammonia - adding acid as you commented/questioned would cause the whole solution to kickout and mess up the ultrasonic tank. A cleaning solution needs to remove dirt and oil, but ...
NAWCC Member. Oct 12, 2009. #2. Hello Fred, Mineral Spirits is a good pre-cleaning solvent that is inexpensive. There are commercial solvent based cleaning solutions that can be used in ultrasonic cleaners, but I would be very cautious having 3-5 gallons of solvent sitting in a room - significant fire potential.
Hi everyone, I'm going to clean my Emperor Clock (Hermle 1161-853A 94 cm 66) . I have Zenith clock cleaning solution for my ultrasonic cleaner. I'm concerned about the shellac finish on the movement parts peel off after cleaning. I'm wondering what to use to rinse off the solution after cleaning.
