I watch the local Craigslist and estate sales for grandfather clocks, and there are occasionally some that are similar to yours (but yours is interesting because of the massive appearance of the case. Right now there are 2 similar aged grandfather clocks with an 'ask price' of $400, and they have been there for a while.
If cleaning and oiling make the thing work, it will be a short term fix till the wear/friction cycle takes over and makes the clock movement unreliable again. Modern clock movements (made in the last 50 or so years) have a life span. That is 25-30 years depending on operating conditions.
You might want to check your local public library for clock instruction books, only try to avoid old British ones, which usually don't cover German movements like yours. The cases were mostly made of solid local walnut and other hardwoods. All else was imported from Germany. Your clock has a Hermle movement that's 39 years old.

Hanson Grandfather Clock. I have always loved Clocks. And was able to pick up a Hanson grandfather clock this past weekend at an estate ssale. It's not working properly. I've been researching and trying to find out why. I have pictures I can post. I was able to contact a man I know who works on them.
Thank you so much! Now I need to locate a manual, to instruct me on how to fix the chime, only works for 45 minutes to an hour then stops. There is a small envelope attached near the bottom of the serial number plate with an original part if needed for the chime. But I will also look for someone who specializes in grandfather clock repair.
