In association with Pan American Airways (PAA), the Lagos–New York City route was opened in October 1964 using PAA's DC-8 and Boeing 707 aircraft. [3] WAAC Nigeria changed its name to Nigeria Airways in 1971. [2] The carrier was wholly owned by the Government of Nigeria for almost its entire life. The airline ceased operations in 2003.
In June 2009, Delta Air Lines began a route to New York City via Dakar. [7] The following June, the carrier introduced seasonal nonstop service to New York. [8] [9] It was reported in 2012 that Delta had suspended flights to Abuja due to the high cost of fuel and diminished passenger counts. [10]
