The island was offered for sale in 1987 for $750,000. In 1993 it was purchased by Standish real estate broker Robert Wiltse and other investors with plans consisting of 24 large houses. After accepting 15 deposits and constructing a harbor, Wiltse changed his mind about the development.
French explorers named the location Point Au Grès; grès means "gritty stone" or "sandstone," from which the river and the town take their names. It was first settled in 1862 temporarily by workers on the Saginaw–Au Sable State Road. The first permanent settler was John Edward Bradley, who built the Bradley House in 1866.
Au Gres Township (/ ˈ ɔː ɡ r eɪ / AW-gray) is a civil township of Arenac County in the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2020 census , the township population was 896. [ 3 ] The city of Au Gres borders the township to the east but both are administered autonomously.

Arenac County was created by the Michigan Territory on 2 March 1831, then attached on 2 March 1836 to Saginaw County for administration. The creation and organization of Bay County overlaid Arenac and annexed portions of Saginaw and Midland Counties, causing the legal elimination of Arenac County on 20 April 1857.
