The release of the single was followed by their debut album, Franz Ferdinand, which debuted at number three on the UK Albums Chart. Also made for the Record Store Day, on 16 April 2011 Domino released the compilation Covers E.P., which featured songs of Tonight: Franz Ferdinand played by Peaches, LCD Soundsystem, Stephin Merritt, ESG and Debbie Harry (who recorded in duet with the band). The first edition was only vinyl, and on 2 May 2011 it was released on CD.

Franz Ferdinand formed in Glasgow in 2002 and wrote "Take Me Out" the following year. Songwriter Alex Kapranos said the idea for the song's theme came from watching a snipers' duel in Enemy at the Gates and that "it felt like a very good metaphor for the kind of romantic situations that we sometimes find ourselves in".
