The old town hall. The first town hall in South Shields was commissioned as a manorial courthouse by the Dean and Chapter of Durham in the Market Place in 1768. The town was once known in Roman times as Arbeia and as Caer Urfa by the Early Middle Ages. In 2021 it had a population of 75,337.
It joined the network as a terminus station on 24 March 1984, following the opening of the fifth phase of the network between Heworth and South Shields. The original Metro station was closed on 8 July 2019 and was resited around 100 m (330 ft) to the south-east. On 4 August 2019, the station reopened as part of the new South Shields Interchange.
South Tyneside College is a large further education college in South Tyneside in North East England. Its main site is in the town of South Shields . The college offers part-time and full-time courses for young students and adults.
