As early as 1972, the Shoreland High School Foundation initiated "Project S" to raise $500,000 to build a new school building on property donated by Elmer Kirchner. [14] In February 1975, its rising enrollment caused a move into a block of rooms on the third floor of the east wing of St. Joseph High School. [15]
Many of the last class of 7th grade students to enter Butler Junior High School were in the very first graduating class of Shorewood High School in 1978. Shorewood High School underwent a 6.5 million dollar renovation in 1997. [7] In 2011 the school district approved plans to replace the school building with a new facility on the same site.

A third high school, Shoreline High School, closed in June 1986 due to a decline in enrollment; its 1,000 students were divided between Shorecrest and Shorewood.
