Charles Henry Purcell (27 January 1883 – 7 September 1951) [1] was one of the most distinguished civil engineers in the United States during the 20th century. He was the chief engineer of the San Francisco - Oakland Bay Bridge, which was his most notable design.
In 1941, Woodruff sued the state of California for $19,013 of back wages for his work designing the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge. [7] He claimed his salary was slashed from $1000 per month to $600 per month from 1934 to 1938. [5] Woodruff later served as a design engineer for the 1957 Mackinac Bridge designed by David B. Steinman.
