Reversing in the underground station was too time-consuming for through trains such as the former S-Bahn line S 21, which ran parallel to line S 1 .

The former run to Wuppertal-Vohwinkel is now conducted by the S 68. The S11 runs are normally operated with DBAG Class 423 stock, usually with two coupled sets per train.
Line 10 runs hourly between Berlin and Düsseldorf or Cologne. Every second train is divided or combined in Hamm depending on their travel direction. A part of the trains run via Essen to Düsseldorf, while some continue to Cologne. The other trains runs via the Bergisches Land to Cologne.

Düsseldorf Airport (Bahnhof Düsseldorf Flughafen) is a railway station in Düsseldorf, Germany on the Cologne–Duisburg line that connects Düsseldorf Airport to Düsseldorf-Stadtmitte and long-distance trains, most of them ICE trains. Opened in May 2000, the new railway station has the capacity of 300 train departures per day.
Today's NRW-Express replaced existing express services on individual sections of the route after the regionalisation of transport in Germany. A number of stations previously served by long-distance trains, such as Düsseldorf-Benrath and Wattenscheid came to be served by regional services only.
Line S1 is a S-Bahn line on the Rhine-Ruhr network. It is operated by DB Regio.It runs from Dortmund via Bochum and Essen to Duisburg.From there it travels south to Düsseldorf and Hilden before continuing to Solingen.
