The Railway Magazine is a monthly British railway magazine, aimed at the railway enthusiast market, that has been published in London since July 1897. As of 2010 it was, for three years running, the railway magazine with the largest circulation in the United Kingdom, having a monthly average sale during 2009 of 34,715 [2] (the figure for 2007 being 34,661). The Railway Magazine was a long-running monthly railway magazine dating back to July 1897, but in 1988, whilst under the Editorship of John N. Slater (1970–1989), lost its position as "best-selling rail title." [3] That went to a younger competitor, Steam Railway magazine, founded nine years earlier under the launch Editor David Wilcock. The magazine takes a broadly supportive stance on High Speed 2 and began running a regular column dedicated to it in 2013. The magazine's managing editor was Nigel Harris, who was editor for 28 years between 1995 and September 2023. [2] Dickon Ross took over as editor in 2024.

When the circulation of Railway World decreased to an unviable level, Ian Allan Publishing decided to replace the title entirely. The new monthly publication was initially to be called Railways, but given the heavy photographic content of the new title, as well as the similarity of the name to other magazines, the brand of Railways Illustrated was decided on.
