The Fender HM Strat was an electric guitar produced by Fender Musical Instruments from 1988 until 1992. A relatively radical departure from Leo Fender's classic Stratocaster design, it was Fender's answer to Superstrats produced by manufacturers such as Jackson Guitars and Ibanez. The HM in the guitars name stands for heavy metal.
The STRAT featured a hotter bridge pickup, marketed by Fender as the X-1. The controls and hardware were gold plated and included a uniquely massive synchronized tremolo. There was no standard neck for The STRAT, but three shapes were available: C, D, and U. Some colors featured matched headstock painting.
On 24 June 1999 Clapton sold the guitar through Christie's Auction House in New York City to help raise funds for his alcohol and drug treatment center, Crossroads Centre. Brownie sold for US$497,500 becoming the most expensive guitar ever sold at the time only to be eclipsed by Clapton's other favourite guitar Blackie on 24 June 2004.
The electric guitars in this range were manufactured in East Asia, and typically sold as part of a starter package along with a Squier SP-10 practice amplifier (e.g. "Starcaster Strat Pack"). [1] In 2006–2007 the Fender website identified them as being sold through Best Buy , Target , Sam's Club and Costco outlets.
Two such guitars which were custom built for Eric Clapton came with a traditional '50s era-style maple neck and a hardtail non-tremolo bridge. In many respects, the Elite series certainly outlined the renewed innovating capacities of Fender but in an otherwise fairly conservative guitar world it did not prove a milestone as anticipated.
