Kit Kat (stylised as KitKat in various countries) is a chocolate-covered wafer bar confection created by Rowntree's of York, England.It is produced globally by Nestlé (which acquired Rowntree's in 1988), [1] except in the United States, where it is made under licence by the H. B. Reese Candy Company, a division of the Hershey Company (an agreement Rowntree's first made with Hershey in 1970).
This company had invented such products as the Violet Crumble and Polly Waffle. A view of the Nestlé production facility in York, England, in 2009. The Yorkie and Lion chocolate bars were introduced in 1976. [6] In 1978, the Hershey contract was renegotiated, giving Hershey the rights to the Kit Kat and Rolo brands in the US in perpetuity. [6]

[1] [2] [3] Nestlé, which operates the Kit Kat brand in Japan, reports that the brand overtook Meiji Chocolate as the top-selling confectionery in Japan from 2012 to 2014. [4]

A limited edition Caramac Kit Kat bar was released in the United Kingdom in 2005 [3] and due to popular demand it was brought back in 2007. In 2015 a buttons version was launched. [4] In November 2023, Nestle announced that they would be withdrawing the Caramac from their range due to low sales. [5]
