Portrait of Napoleon III was an oil on canvas painting by the German portrait painter Franz Xaver Winterhalter, created in 1853. It was an official portrait of the French Emperor Napoleon III, who reigned as Emperor of the Second French Empire from 1852 to 1870. The work had the dimensions of 240 cm high and 155 cm wide.
Winterhalter not only painted the official portraits of the British royal house but also dedicated himself to producing private images, as is the case with this work that was commissioned as a surprise gift from Queen Victoria to her husband Prince Albert on the occasion of his twenty-fourth birthday. Albert well appreciated the portrait.
Elisabeth Hermine Winterhalter (17 December 1856, in Munich – 13 February 1952, in Hofheim am Taunus) was a German gynecologist, surgeon, feminist and patron of the arts. She was one of the first female doctors and the first female surgeon in Germany.
Born on 28 June 1847, Carmen-Ida-Marie Aguado was the daughter of Alexandre Aguado and Claire Emilie MacDonnel. [2] Claire was a lady-in-waiting to Eugénie de Montijo, and Alexandre was a patient at a mental asylum. [3]
