The Mitsubishi Astron or 4G5/4D5 engine, is a series of straight-four internal combustion engines first built by Mitsubishi Motors in 1972. Engine displacement ranged from 1.8 to 2.6 litres, making it one of the largest four-cylinder engines of its time.
The Mitsubishi Saturn or 4G3 engine is series of overhead camshaft (OHC) straight-four internal combustion engines introduced by Mitsubishi Motors and saw first service in the 1969 Colt Galant. Displacement ranges from 1.2 to 1.8 L (1,239 to 1,755 cc), although there was also a rare 2-litre (1,994 cc) inline-six version built from 1970 until 1976.
Originally available only as a 2835 cc intercooled turbo, detail improvements in 1996 and a larger 3.2 litre option in 1999 served to improve power, torque, fuel economy and emissions. The final version has 3.0 litres swept volume and Common rail direct injection.
The larger 4N14 2.3 L (2,268 cc) engine uses piezo fuel-injectors that produce a finer fuel spray. Both engines feature a fast ceramic glowplug system. The engines are designed to operate at a lower compression ratio , thus lowering the combustion pressure, allowing the use of an aluminium cylinder block that reduces weight .
For some export markets, such as Chile and Argentina, this version was known as Mitsubishi L100, correlating with the L200 truck and L300 vans. [2] This model was thoroughly updated in 1981, when the engine was changed to the timing belt-equipped G23B, producing the same 31 PS (23 kW) as the version it replaced.
