Lockbourne is a village in Franklin County and Pickaway County, Ohio, United States. The population was 236 at the 2020 census . Lockbourne is located near Rickenbacker International Airport , and had initially provided its original name of Lockbourne Air Force Base.
The facility opened in June 1942 as Lockbourne Army Airfield, named for the nearby village of Lockbourne. [5] [6] Soon renamed the Northeastern Training Center of the Army Air Corps, it provided basic pilot training and military support; it also trained Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASPs) to fly B-17 bombers and glider pilots to fly the Waco CG-4A.
It was assigned to Ninth Air Force at Lockbourne Air Force Base, Ohio, where it was inactivated on 24 December 1969. The division's components provided tactical airlift support worldwide, and after 1965, trained Lockheed C-130 Hercules crews and maintenance personnel, primarily for deployment to the Pacific and participation in the Vietnam War .
