In 2008-2009 it had a peak enrollment of 219. In 2014 there was concern expressed about the school's survival expressed in the community, and in 2016 enrollment was down to 139, with 22 being in special education. The school directors chose to close the school in June 2016; the archdiocese did not order the closure. [2]
They also established a community to teach at St. Mary School in Lake Leelanau, Michigan. Some thirty other locations soon followed in the Tri-Cities region of the Michigan peninsula. [2] The Sisters opened Sacred Heart Academy in Grand Rapids, for which a new facility was built in 1921. This name was changed in 1925 to Marywood Academy. [5]

A separate hall was built in 1953 and another wing was added to the building in 1954. However, after that enrollment began to steadily decline; in 1971 the Academy opened to boys in the younger grades. Even so, in 1974 enrolment in the academy's high school was only 84 students. The high school closed in 1974, and the elementary school in 1989.
