In June 2024, a lawsuit, lead by the Recording Industry Association of America, was filed against Udio and Suno alleging widespread infringement of copyrighted sound recordings. The lawsuit sought to bar the companies from training on copyrighted music, as well as damages of up to $150,000 per work from infringements that have already taken place.
The following is a list of songs that have been the subject of plagiarism disputes. In several of the disputes the artists have stated that the copying of melody or chord progression was unconscious. In some cases the song was sampled or covered. Some cases are still awaiting litigation.
The troubling thing is that it has been obvious to anyone who used Suno’s or Udio’s text-to-music generators that they were trained on copyrighted material and could generate infringing outputs.
The plaintiffs in the cases are music companies that hold rights to sound recordings infringed by Suno and Udio – including Sony Music Entertainment, Universal Music Group and Warner Records.
