University City is the easternmost portion of West Philadelphia, encompassing several Philadelphia universities. It is situated directly across the Schuylkill River from Center City. The University of Pennsylvania was instrumental in coining the name University City as part of a 1950s urban renewal and gentrification effort.

It was originally the home of Hahnemann University, which merged with the Medical College of Pennsylvania in 1993. Drexel acquired MCP Hahnemann University in 2002. San Francisco State University's original campus was on Nob Hill, where it was established as the San Francisco State Normal School on Powell Street between Clay and Sacramento Streets. The university's official mailing address is in Philadelphia. A bridge that spans City Avenue connects the two sides of the main campus. Its 125 acres (0.51 km 2) are concentrated from Cardinal Avenue to 52nd Street and Overbrook Avenue to City Avenue. The university also owns several buildings that are not on the main campus.
