By 1943, some 80 percent of Cypriot girls attended primary school. [6] When, in 1960, elementary education was made compulsory, the two sexes were equally enrolled. [6] By the 1980s, girls made up 45 percent of those receiving secondary education. Only after the mid-1960s did women commonly leave Cyprus to receive higher education. [6]
