First marketed in March 2005, the car quickly became BMW Group's best-selling car worldwide, and by the end of the year 229,900 vehicles had been delivered. [76] The BMW E90 series was the best-selling luxury car in Canada and the United States. The 2006 E90 marked the 15th consecutive year that the 3 Series was named on Car and Driver's 10Best.
In June 2022, BMW revealed the first BMW M3 Touring, codenamed G81. Based on the seventh generation 3 Series, it marks the first time a BMW M Touring model reached the market. [ 27 ] The touring version of the M3 contains the same engine and interior setup as the M3 sedan, but extends the roof line to become a wagon .
The 320i EfficientDynamics Edition and 316i were added in autumn of 2012. [15] In the United States, the arrival of the four-cylinder models marked the first time a 3 Series was sold with a four-cylinder petrol engine, since the E36 318i of the late 1990s. [16] The 328i xDrive and 335i xDrive went on sale in the summer of 2012. [17]
Launched in March 1994, the E36 3 Series Compact (model code E36/5), was BMW's first hatchback since the 2002 Touring model was discontinued in 1974. It reportedly cost BMW $500 million USD to develop the hatchback from the E36 platform. [2] From the front bumper to the A-pillar, the E36/5 is identical to the E36 saloon.
In the following years, the availability of xDrive increased throughout the model range, and it is currently available on most models. The first BMW M models to use xDrive were the 2009 E70 X5M and E71 X6M models. The first non-SUV BMW M model to not be rear-wheel drive was the 2017 F90 M5, which was only available with xDrive. [17]
The third generation of the BMW 3 Series range of compact executive cars is designated under the model code E36, and was produced by the German automaker BMW from 1990 to 2000. The initial models were of the four-door saloon body style, followed by the coupé, convertible, wagon ("Touring"), and eventually hatchback (" Compact ").
The 320d, 320i, 330d, 330i and M340i are available in both rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive variants. [25] [26] BMW India stated that it would begin deliveries of the M340i xDrive in January 2023. [27] The Touring variant (G21) was launched on 12 June 2019.
The BMW 3 Series (E46) is the fourth generation of the BMW 3 Series range of compact executive cars manufactured by German automaker BMW. Produced from 1997 to 2006, it was the successor to the E36 3 Series , which ceased production in 2000.
