Museum entry. The first Maritime Museum began in 1971 as the Allen Knight Maritime Museum. It was located in the basement of the Monterey Museum of Art, and principally housed the collection of Allen Knight, who briefly worked as a sailor in 1916, and collected artifacts and memorabilia related to maritime activities throughout his life.
Monterey became the capital of the Province of Californias in 1777 and the chapel was renamed the Royal Presidio Chapel. The original 1770-71 church along with other buildings in the presido were destroyed by fire caused by a salute gun in 1789 and was replaced by the present sandstone structure built between 1791 and 1795. El Castillo de Monterey (Spanish for "The Castle of Monterey") was a fortification in Monterey, California, founded in 1792 by the Spanish Empire. The fort was constructed to protect the Monterey port and the Presidio of Monterey from invaders. [2] The site was officially listed on the National Register of Historic Places on November 23, 1971.
