Menu 2, Shredded Beef, and Menu 13, Cheese Tortellini, from the 2019 series The contents of MRE Menu 2, Shredded Beef The Meal, Ready-to-Eat (MRE) is a self-contained individual United States military ration used by the United States Armed Forces and Department of Defense.
The meals cost approximately one-fifth of the cost of a Meal, Ready-to-Eat (MRE), [3] or US$4.70 in 2012. [4] The rations were first used in Bosnia in 1993 as part of Operation Provide Promise. [5] The meals are designed to be able to survive being air-dropped without a parachute. [3]
It was replaced by the similarly canned Meal, Combat, Individual (MCI) in 1958; its modern successor is the retort pouch-based Meal, Ready-to-Eat (MRE), introduced in 1980. Development of the C-ration began in 1938. The first rations were field-tested in 1940, and wide-scale adoption followed soon after.
Lunch and Dinner Variety Pail. For less than $100 (closer to $75 on sale), Augason Farms’ aptly named Lunch and Dinner Variety Pail offers a good mix of—wait for it—lunches and dinners.
In total three meals provided 2,830 kilocalories (11,800 kilojoules) of food energy and 79 grams of protein, [12] [7] depending upon components. As it was originally intended as an "assault" ration to be issued for short durations, the K-ration was designed to be used for a maximum of 15 meals.
Although the MRE was formally adopted as the Department of Defense combat ration in 1975, the first large-scale production test of the MRE did not occur until 1978, with the first MRE I rations packed and delivered to Army stores in 1981. [2] MCI rations continued to be issued when the MRE was introduced until inventories were depleted. [1]
