Western Libraries is the library system of the University of Western Ontario in London, Ontario. In 1898, the university Senate appointed James Waddell Tupper as the University of Western Ontario's first University Librarian. [ 1 ]
The Library and Information Science (LIS) program at the University of Western Ontario was established in 1966 as the School of Library and Information Science (SLIS). In response to a shortage of professional librarians in Canada in the 1960s, the Ontario government set up a committee to investigate the creation of a new library school. [ 5 ]
When Western's SLIS was established, it was housed in a temporary prefabricated structure located on an unpaved parking lot behind the football stadium.
