Intercity passenger traffic between Tokyo, Nagoya and Osaka largely transferred to the Tōkaidō Shinkansen after it was completed in 1964. Kodama (こだま, "Echo") is one of the three train services running on the Tōkaidō and San'yō Shinkansen lines.
