The maps are mainly published at a scale of 1:25,000 or 1:50,000, with trails, footpaths and additional tourist information highlighted. The new generation of hiking maps is printed with c coordinate grid for GPS navigation. Since mid-2011 weatherproof and rip-resistant maps have been printed, gradually replacing the existing maps.
The normal map sheets are arranged in a grid pattern. In addition, there are composition maps (i.e. extending over sheet borders) covering urban agglomerations, or tourist areas. Many of 1:50,000 scale map sheets are also available as hiking maps (with highlighted trails) or as ski tour maps.

The Falkenstein was probably built on and used as a castle lookout from the middle of the 14th century. Like almost all of Saxon Switzerland on the right bank of the Elbe, it belonged to the Barony of Hohnstein with its seat at Hohnstein Castle, which was given to the Bohemian noble family of Berka von Dubá in 1353 by Emperor Charles IV as a Bohemian fiefdom.
