The earliest stars of Sri Lankan recorded music came from the theater at a time when the traditional open-air drama (referred to in Sinhala as kolam, sokari or nadagam) remained the most popular form of entertainment. A 1903 album, entitled Nurthi, is the first recorded album to come out of Sri Lanka via Radio Ceylon.
De Silva was influenced by the work of C. Don Bastian (1852-1921), the creator of the ‘Nurthi’, who was also the editor of the first daily Sinhala news paper. [ 4 ] [ 3 ] [ 5 ] De Silva wrote and produced several historical and religious plays drawing from nurti and nadagam traditions.
Wickremesooriya popularized Sinhala pop music amongst a widely western speaking audience. He was able to recognize and pick talent and transform them into stars in the Sinhala Pop scene: Golden Chimes, [4] Mendis Foursome along with Maxwell Mendis, [5] Stanley Peiris and The Fortunes [6] and produced countless hit songs for which Sooriya is well known today.
Egodahage George Wilfred Alwis Samarakoon (13 January 1911 – 2 April 1962) known as Ananda Samarakoon was a Sri Lankan (Sinhalese) composer and musician. He composed the Sri Lankan national anthem "Namo Namo Matha" and is considered the father of artistic Sinhala music and founder of the modern Sri Lankan Sinhala Geeta Sahitya (Song Literature). [1]
