When you mark a message from a mailing list as spam, and we trust the sender, you'll be given the option to unsubscribe rather than marking it as spam. Select Unsubscribe and you will no longer receive any messages from the mailing list. Selecting Report as spam will mark the message as spam and move it into the spam folder.

Spam messages can't be sent if the user opts out of them. When a user opts out of a message, their e-mail gets stored in a public registry. Companies sending spam messages to users registered in the registry have to pay a fine. Under the ECA, spam messages can't be sent if the address of the spam message is invalid or the user identity is unknown.
When legitimate messages are rejected, the sender needs to contact the recipient out of channel. When legitimate messages are relegated to a spam folder, the sender is not notified of this. If a recipient periodically checks their spam folder, that will cost them time and if there is a lot of spam it is easy to overlook the few legitimate messages.
