The Mali War [c] is an ongoing conflict that started in January 2012 between the northern and southern parts of Mali in Africa. On 16 January 2012, several insurgent groups began fighting a campaign against the Malian government for independence or greater autonomy for northern Mali, which they called Azawad .

An agreement was reached between Mali and MINUSMA on October 18 allowing Chadian peacekeepers to repatriate "essential equipment" while "non-essential equipment" would be left behind. The agreement also ended the blockage of MINUSMA reinforcements in Gao and Tombouctou regions, and allowed all peacekeepers in Tessalit to return to Chad. [ 34 ]
