In the Republican Primary he was opposed by Matt Miller and was able to move onto the General with 59% of the vote. In the General Election Caldwell faced only a write in candidate and was able to win the election with 96% of the vote.

Within Cape Coral, the highway is named "Veterans' Memorial Parkway", and is a multilane, controlled-access highway. Within Fort Myers, it is named "Colonial Boulevard".
