Glass worked in the family business, Lynchburg's daily newspapers the News and Advance, later combined as The News & Advance. He started in marketing and public relations, and rose to publisher. During his tenure, the publishing group added local newspapers in Culpeper, Richlands, and Tazewell and continued publishing until 1979.
Carter Glass Jr. was born to newspaper publisher Carter Glass and his wife Aurelia (Ria) Caldwell McDearmon Glass (1859-1937) on March 29, 1893. His father became a Virginia state senator in 1898, and later a U.S. Congressman and U.S. Senator.
