Gratiot County (/ ˈ ɡ r æ ʃ ɪ t / GRASH-it) is a county in the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2020 Census , the population was 41,761. [ 2 ] The county seat is Ithaca , [ 3 ] although its most populous city is Alma .

[3] He erected a mill and a settlement, "Elyton," sprang up in the area. In 1858, James Gargett platted a larger nearby area and dubbed it "Alma."
