Thomas Notley (Cerne Abbas, Dorset, England 1632 - 3 April 1679) was the 8th Proprietary Governor of Maryland from 1676 through 1679. [1] Having first moved to Barbados he immigrated to America in 1662. [ 2 ]

The Province of Maryland [1] was an English and later British colony in North America from 1634 [2] until 1776, when the province was one of the Thirteen Colonies that joined in supporting the American Revolution against Great Britain. In 1781, Maryland was the 13th signatory to the Articles of Confederation.
After Calvert died in April 1632, the charter for "Maryland Colony" (in Latin Terra Mariae) was granted to his son, Cecilius Calvert, 2nd Baron Baltimore, on June 20, 1632. [18] Some historians viewed this as compensation for his father having been stripped of his title of Secretary of State in 1625 after announcing his Roman Catholicism .
