SpinRite was originally written as a hard drive interleave tool. [3] At the time SpinRite was designed, hard drives often had a defect list printed on the nameplate, listing known bad sectors discovered at the factory. In changing the drive's interleave, SpinRite needed to be able to remap these physical defects into different logical sectors.
SpinRite, a hard disk scanning and data recovery utility first released in 1988. [30] As of January 2019 the current version was 6.0, [31] which was first released in 2004. [32] SpinRite is a commercial product, costing US$89 as of July 2021. [31] Gibson's work on SpinRite has led to him being considered an expert on hard drive failure. [33]
As for semi-abandonware, actually each generation of spinrite corresponds to each generation of hard drives and controllers. Since spinrite 6.0 is working well for these drives - well do not fix this which works fine. There is new version, 6.1 under development, which must catch up to all 6 years as time and hard drive and controller technology.

MS-DOS/PC DOS versions 4.0 and earlier assign letters to all of the floppy drives before considering hard drives, so a system with four floppy drives would call the first hard drive E:. Starting with DOS 5.0, the system ensures that drive C: is always a hard disk, even if the system has more than two physical floppy drives.
To solve this problem, entry-level IBM AT models that did not have a hard drive were shipped with a 5-ohm, 50-watt resistor connected on the +12 V line of the hard disk power connector. In normal operation this resistor drew 2.4 amperes (dissipating 28.8 watts), getting fairly hot.
