Chapel of the Chimes was founded as California Electric Crematory in 1909 as a crematory and columbarium at 4499 Piedmont Avenue, at the entrance of Mountain View Cemetery in Oakland, California. The present building dates largely from a 1928 redevelopment based on the designs of the architect Julia Morgan . [ 1 ]
The chapel continues to be actively used. As of 2019, it serves as the sanctuary for the local congregation of the Church of Christ, and also hosts weddings and funerals. [5] [7] Ca. 2007, a further renovation was carried out by the Suisun Fairfield Rockville Cemetery District, which now owns the chapel.
The chapel was restored in 1965, when its foundations were raised in response to a 1964 flood, [4] but was damaged in the 1997 Yosemite Valley floods and required repair. [3] The chapel was placed on the National Register of Historic Places on December 12, 1973.
By September 2024, the chapel had been fully dismantled. [8] Thousands of parts were meticulously documented and stored at a covered location near the chapel on stable ground. [8] It was still unclear where and when the chapel would be rebuilt and how $20 to $30 million would be raised towards the anticipated cost of reassembling the chapel. [8]

Conejo Mountain is a 1,814-foot-high mountain (553 m) in Ventura County, California, near Camarillo on the eastern boundary of the Oxnard Plain. [ 1 ] [ 2 ] [ 3 ] At the western edge of the Conejo Valley , it is adjacent to the Santa Monica Mountains .
